Sun Devil Dream Comes True For Shane Jones

After a disappointing 2001 season, it would be easy for the cynical ASU fan to wonder why any quality Football player would want to come and play for the Sun Devils. However, for some young men, playing in Tempe is simply living out a dream. Defensive tackle Shane Jones, who transferred from Sacramento City Community College in the spring semester, is doing exactly that.

"I wanted to always follow in the footsteps of my brother Shawnbay," says Jones: "He wanted to come here but didn't, and I'm pretty much filling his dream right now" The journey to ASU started for Jones last spring. "We (Sacramento City) had a lot of scouts looking at us, and (coach) Monachino had his eye on me from the start. I was excited that he called me right before our season started, and he called me a lot since. When he didn't call for a couple of weeks, I got worried. So I called him in October, and he said that he was about to call me to offer me a scholarship." Schools like San Diego State, Iowa State, and Idaho were recruiting the defensive tackle. However, ASU and coach Ted Monachino were there first. That was the difference maker for Jones. "ASU got the early jump on me. When he (Monachino) came down for the first time to see our game against Foothills, he left a great impression. He was someone I wanted to play for. His whole demeanor...I just knew I wanted to be coached by someone like him. And he told me that he wanted to coach me. That was the whole thing."

Anybody following ASU Football for the last several months knows that defensive tackle was a position that ASU needed immediate help with. A fact that was hardly overlooked by a player like Shane Jones "Playing early was a factor. When I got that first phone call from ASU, I knew this was for real. I looked at the media guide, and I see that all the defensive tackles are seniors. It's just fit like a glove, and everything just fell in place. So, when coach Monachino tells me I'll play early, I know he was serious." Not only were the Sun Devils fortunate to fill the pressing need at defensive tackle, but they also got a player that was able to get a head start and enroll in the spring. "I wish I could stay home longer." says the junior, "But I knew sooner or later this day would come. Coming early does help you. Coming in the summer, and starting to work out right away, is just too much. I talked to Riccardo Carlos, and he told me he passed out the first day. So, right now I just know I'm getting so far ahead of the other guys being recruited."

And what are Jones' first impressions now that he's an ASU student? "Lots of girls! (smile) The classes remind me of Sac City. There are not a lot of people in my classes… I know I'm getting a grade A education. I get homesick, but every time I see that stadium, I get chills down my spine and anxious. Everybody is so nice. It seems like I've known these players for a long time. They really make it comfortable for me and all the new guys." When asked how about the upcoming spring practice next month the former Sacramento City Community College player answers "I'm learning the system and getting comfortable with living away from home. It's not Football right now, It's just school so we're taking care of that. But I'm pumped up for spring practice. I never had a full padded spring practice before, so I'm eager for that. After the recruiting season is over, I'll go over and talk to the coach one on one and watch some film, so I can be even further ahead."

Now that the dream of playing At ASU has materialized, Jones isn't about to rest on his laurels "I just want to show that JC kids have experience. I know it's (the Pac-10) a higher level, but I want the guys to know that I'm coming in with two years experience. I want to start every game; I'll tell you that right now. I'm not used to sitting on the bench. I'm gonna do whatever it takes. I want to get out of here with a degree, and hopefully play in the NFL." If Shane Jones continues with his success rate of fulfilling dreams, both he and ASU will be quite happy once they come true.
