As good as the Devils were at the plate tonight, sophomore right-handed pitcher Pat Bresnehan was equally as impressive on the mound. Bresnehan allowed just one run on four hits while striking out five in recording his first win as a starter and the first complete game of his collegiate career. The win improved Bresnehan's record to 2-2 on the season.
The Devils took an early lead in the first inning after senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch sparked a two-out rally with a single to centerfield. After two more singles and two walks the Devils found themselves with an early 2-0 lead and never looked back. The Devils blew the game wide open in the fourth inning as they scored nine runs in the inning lead by a two-run triple by Gosewisch and a two-run homer by sophomore outfielder Colin Curtis. The Devils added two more runs in the fifth and continued the onslaught in the eighth by adding four more off a two-run double by Gosewisch and a two-run homer by senior preseason All-American Jeff Larish. The homerun was Larish's 11th on the season and the 39th for his career.
Offensively every starter had at least one hit for the Devils and six batters finish the game with more than one hit. Gosewisch lead the Devils at the plate as he finished with a career-high five hits on the day. Gosewisch also scored four runs and drove in four. Curtis ended-up 3-for-6 with two runs and three RBI's including his first homerun of the season. Other Devils recording a multi-hit game included senior outfielder Jeff Larish (2-for-7 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI), sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens (3-for-4 2 R, 2 RBI), freshman centerfielder J.J. Sferra (2-for-4 1 R, 2 RBI), and freshman shortstop Andrew Romine (2-for-4 1 R).
The Devils look to take the decisive game three in the series tomorrow as they play the Trojans in a 1 p.m. PT/ 2 p.m. MT game which will be held at Dedeaux Field in California.
