Devils Tip Trojans to Win Opening Pac-10 Series

Senior preseason All-Americans Jeff Larish and Jason Urquidez, helped lead the Arizona State Sun Devils to a 2-1 extra inning victory over the No. 21 USC Trojans Saturday afternoon, to give the Devils their first Pac-10 series of the year.

Larish did his part at the plate as he belted his NCAA leading 12th homerun in the top of the fourth inning to give the Devils an early 1-0 lead and drove in the winning run on a sacrifice fly in the tenth. Larish's homerun was the 40th of his career and the two RBI's were numbers 200 and 201. Senior right-hander Jason Urquidez was brilliant on the mound today as he held the Trojan bats in check all afternoon. Urquidez had a shutout going until the bottom of the eighth inning when he gave up a game-tying homerun to Trojan preseason All-American Jeff Clement. Urquidez gave up just one run on six hits in his eight innings of work.

The Trojans tried to put together a late comeback in the bottom of the tenth as Dale Legaspi led off the inning with a double off Sun Devil reliever Brett Bordes. Bordes, was then pulled in favor of sophomore right-hander Zechry Zinicola, who came in to get the next three outs and earn his second save of the season. Bordes picked up the victory in relief to improve his record to 2-3 on the year.

The Devils are now 18-13 on the year and 2-1 in conference play. They return home next weekend for a three-game non-conference series against Wright State. The series will begin Friday night at 6:30 p.m. at Packard Stadium.
