ASU Weekend Wrap-up

The Sun Devil baseball team took a step in the right direction this week and swept the 25th ranked Tennessee Volunteer team this past weekend. This was a great victory for the Devils, over a team that appeared in the College World Series last year.


The Sun Devils started off the series with a 7-4 win in a game that saw 4 Volunteers ejected and 11 walks from the Tennessee pitching staff. The Devils improved to 5-0 on the season with the win. Tennessee coach Rod Delmonico was ejected in the 2nd inning, and then came back to the Tennessee dugout before moving to a seat in the stands.

Getting the Friday start this time was Ryan Schroyer, fresh of his 11-strikeout performance and being named NCAA player of the week. He struck out 8 hitters in 5 2/3 innings while giving up 4 runs. J.J. Jackson came in relief and did not record an out. Robbie McClellan took over and pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball while recording 7 strikeouts and only 2 hits allowed.

DH Steve Garrabrants was the only Devil to have 2 hits, going 2 for 5. He scored in the 1st inning off an Andre Ethier hit. C Tuffy Gosewisch lead off the 2nd inning with a single up the middle and was eventually driven in by a CF Jon Sheaffer double to left field. The 6th inning saw 5 walks by the Tennessee pitchers, which lead to 4 runs by the Devils. Jon Sheaffer lead off the inning with a walk, and eventually scored of an Andre Ethier bases loaded walk. Next up was Ryan McKenna who was pinch-hitting for Dennis Wyrick. He also walked which scored LF Rod Allen. SS Ian Kinsler came up next and drove in Ethier and 1b Jeremy West. Rod Allen hit a triple in the bottom half of the Devil 8th inning and scored on a Jeremy West groundout to 3b.


Mike Esposito showed why he was a Pre-Season All-American while giving up just 1 run and going the distance in the 8-1 victory. ASU improved to 6-0 on the season win this win. Esposito improved to 2-0 while not giving up a run or a walk in 9 innings pitched.

DH Steve Garrabrants lead off the 1st inning with a homerun to left field. LF Rod Allen then singled to right field and was driven in by a 1B Jeremy West triple to right center. CF Jon Sheaffer singled to left field in the 2nd inning and was driven in by Dustin Pedroia after he singled to left field. The Devils then put the game away in the 4th inning by scoring 5 runs. After Jon Sheaffer flied out to right field, Steve Garrabrants singled to right field. Jeremy West drove in 2 runs with a double down the left field line bringing in Pedroia and Garrabrants. Next up was RF Andre Ethier who tripled to left field scoring West and Rod Allen. Dennis Wyrick came up and was hit by pitcher Beau Massey who had just come in relief for Patrick Hicklen. SS Ian Kinsler came up and drove in Ethier after reaching on a fielder's choice.


ASU improved their record to 7-0, while withstanding a late comeback by the Volunteers in the 9th inning. This was the first game that head coach Pat Murphy went with a different lineup than the previous 6 games.

Bryce Kartler got the nod to start and registered 9 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings pitched. He had a no hitter going up until the 6th inning before Ryan Moffett broke it up. Mark Sopko and Robbie McClellan came in relief. McClellan pitched 1 inning of scoreless ball while getting the save.

CF Doug Schutt led off the 1st inning with a single and would be hit in by a Steve Garrabrants single. In the bottom of the 3rd, Sergio Garcia took advantage of his first career start as a Sun Devil when he singled to left field. After he stole second, he would score on a Steve Garrabrants fielder's choice. Andre Ethier singled to right field scoring Schutt. Garrabrants would later score of a Ryan McKenna hit to second base. Andre Ethier would also score on a Dustin Pedroia bunt.

Next up for the Devils is the #2 ranked Florida State Seminoles, which will be played in Tallahassee next weekend. FSU took 1 of 3 from the #1 ranked Stanford Cardinal over the weekend.
