Devil Rout Raiders

The No. 24 Arizona State Sun Devils were able to take game one of their three game series with the Wright State Raiders, in convincing fashion Friday night with a 13-1 victory. The Devils, who just re-entered the rankings after taking two of three from the USC Trojans last week, improved their record to 19-13 on the year.

The Devils bats were on fire all night, as they were able to pound out 16 hits off the Raiders, pitching staff. Senior Joey Hooft sparked the Sun Devil scoring barrage in the second inning after ripping a triple to right to score sophomore outfielder Colin Curtis. Sophomore valley product Seth Dhaenens then stepped to the plate and belted a two-run homerun to right to put the Devils up 3-0. The homerun was Dhaenens second of the year. The Devils went on to score one more run in the inning and never looked back. Hooft finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored and two RBI's and been hitting over .300 including two runs and seven RBI's in the seven games he's played in since his return from a hamstring injury. Curtis led the Devils offensively as he finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's. Other Devils to record a multi-hit game included, Rocky Laguna (2-for-4, R, 2 RBI), Zechry Zinicola (2-for-2, 2 RBI), and J.J. Sferra (2-for-2, 1 R).

On the mound the Devils received a solid pitching performance from junior left-hander Erik Averill. Averill (6-2, 3.03 ERA) picked up the win as he pitched five scoreless innings while allowing just five hits. Averill also recorded five strikeouts to bring his season total to a team high 52, his six wins and 3.03 ERA are also team bests. Sun Devil Head Coach Pat Murphy also got a solid pitching performance from his bullpen, as pitchers Josh Marotz and Josh Satow combined to give up just one run on six hits in four innings of work.

The Devils will look to continue their great play on the diamond tomorrow night as they square off against the Raiders in game two of the three game series. Right-handed pitchers Pat Bresnehan (2-2, 3.76 ERA) and Chris Snyder (1-3, 6.35 ERA) are the probable starters for tomorrow's game that is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start at Packard Stadium in Tempe.
