Devils Continue Dominance Over Raiders

Pat Murphy's Sun Devil baseball team continued to roll Saturday night as they defeated the Wright State Raiders 11-3 to clinch the three game series. The win was number 20 for the 24th ranked Sun Devil's who improved their overall mark to 20-13 on the year.

The Devils jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after the first inning after three run scoring singles by senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, senior left fielder Joey Hooft, and sophomore second baseman Seth Dhaenens. The Raiders struck back with a run in both the second and third innings to cut the Devil lead to one. But the Devils answered back in the bottom of the third to score six runs to blow the game wide open at 9-2.

The Devils pitching staff did the rest from there to hold the lead by allowing just one more run over the final six innings. Sophomore starter Pat Bresnehan recorded his third win of the season to improve his record to 3-2. Bresnehan gave up two runs on five hits while striking out seven in five innings of work. The Devils bullpen did a solid job once again as junior Tony Barnette pitched two scoreless innings without allowing a hit and freshman Seth Garrison finished the game allowing just one run over the final two innings.

Offensively the Devils racked up 13 hits led by senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch. Gosewisch finished the day 3-for-5 with one run and three RBI's. Tuffy is now hitting a team-high .357 and also leads the team with 38 RBI's. Seth Dhaenens continued to stroke the ball as he also had three hits in three at-bats including one run and one RBI. Pat Murphy's decision to place red-shirt freshman Rocky Laguna in the leadoff spot has really paid off. Laguna went 2-for-2 including two walks with three runs and one RBI Saturday night. Laguna has been hitting over .400 with eight runs and four RBI's the last seven games he's been in the leadoff spot. Senior preseason All-American Jeff Larish had a solid day at the plate as he scored three runs after going 1-for-2 with three walks. Larish has walked a team high 27 times, with many of those walks being intentionally. Senior Joey Hooft also stayed hot at the plate as he went 2-for-4 with two RBI's.

The Devils look to sweep the Raiders tomorrow afternoon as the two teams finish the three game series with a 1 p.m. start at Packard Stadium. The Devils will send out senior right-hander Jason Urquidez (4-2, 4.83 ERA) to face the Raider ace Robert Barrett (3-2, 2.82 ERA).
