Devils Sweep Raiders in Convincing Fashion

The 24th ranked Sun Devils completed their three game sweep over the Wright State Raiders today with a 14-1 victory. The win was the Devils fifth in a row and improved their overall record to 21-13. The win was also the Devils 15th in their last 19 games.

The Devils were able to jump out to a early 1-0 lead in the first as senior Tuffy Gosewisch added another RBI to his team-high 39, with an RBI groundout. The Devils then exploded for six more runs in the second after a two-run triple by freshman Andrew Romine and a two-run double by senior Jeff Larish. The Devils took a ten run lead in the third after red-shirt freshman Rocky Laguna hit a three-run homer to right. The homerun was Laguna's first of his career and his 3-for-4 performance was good enough to improve his batting average to a team-high .356. The Devils weren't done scoring just yet, as they added two runs in the bottom of the sixth and two in the seventh after solo homeruns by Jeff Larish and sophomore Joe Persichina. The homerun was Larish's 13th of the year, which leads the Pac-10.

The Devils had 14 hits as a team and five Devils recorded more than one hit, Rocky Laguna (3-for-4, HR, 2 R, 4 RBI, 1 BB), Junior Travis Buck (2-for-5, 2 R, 1 RBI), Jeff Larish (2-for-5, HR, 1 R, 3 RBI), red-shirt sophomore Seth Dhaenens (2-for-2, 2 R, 1 RBI, 2 BB), and freshman J.J. Sferra (2-for-4, 1 R, 1 RBI).

On the mound the Devils were just as impressive, led by senior starter Jason Urquidez. Urquidez (5-2, 4.64 ERA) pitched four innings, allowing one run on three hits while striking out seven Raider batters to pick up his fifth win of the year. The bullpen took over in the top of the fifth and combined to throw five scoreless innings while allowing just two hits. Sophomore Zechry Zinicola recorded three strikeouts in his three innings pitched.

The Devils will return to Pac-10 play next Friday as they face the Cal Bears (20-12, 3-3 Pac-10) in a three game series at Evans Diamond in Berkley. All three match-ups will be broadcast live on KDUS 1060 am.
