The Devils were led by junior left-hander Erik Averill on the mound as Averill threw eight strong innings to pick up his seventh win of the year. Averill (7-2, 2.96 ERA) gave up two runs on just five hits while striking out five in his eight innings of work. Sophomore right-hander Zechry Zinicola, who was placed back in the closer role tonight, finished off the game with two consecutive strikeouts as he pitched the ninth inning. The Devils improved to 23-15 on the season and 4-3 in Pac-10 play.
Averill gave up an early run in the first inning after a couple of hits. But the Devils bats were able to answer right back scoring three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Devils really poured it on scoring four runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning as they to take a commanding 9-1 lead.
Offensively the Devils were able to find their stroke against Stanford preseason All-American Mark Romanczuk. Romanczuk (5-4, 4.98 ERA) was roughed up for nine runs on 12 hits in his seven innings of work. Senior first baseman Jeff Larish led the way for the Devils as he blasted his Pac-10 leading 14th homerun. Larish ended up 2-for-3 on the night with two runs and three RBI's. Senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, senior third baseman Joey Hooft, junior outfielder Travis Buck, and redshirt sophomore Seth Dhaenens all recorded two hits in the game. Gosewisch and Hooft also added a run and one RBI each and Buck scored two runs on the night. Sophomore Joe Persichina was 1-for-3 including a huge two-run single in the four-run third inning.
The Devils will look to continue their success tomorrow evening as they square off against the Cardinals in a 6:30 p.m. match-up. Senior right-hander Jason Urquidez (5-3, 4.74 ERA) will take the mound for the Devils against Stanford right-hander Jeff Gilmore (5-1, 4.01 ERA).
