Offensive Explosion Gives Devils Series Opener Win

The No. 20 Arizona State Sun Devils continued their great play Friday night, as they were able to win their fourth straight game with a 12-5 victory over the visiting UCLA Bruins. The win helped Pat Murphy's Devils improve to 26-15 overall and 7-3 in the Pac-10.

The Devils continued to rip the ball tonight, scoring 12 runs on 17 hits (in last week's three game series against Stanford the Devils scored 25 runs). The Devils took and early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning after senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch blasted a two-run homer over the left-centerfield fence. The Bruins didn't let the lead last long as they scored five runs of their own the very next inning. The five runs came off Sun Devil starter Erik Averill, although only one of the five runs was earned as four runs came after a costly Sun Devil error.

The Devils didn't let the mistake get the best of them and scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to re-gain the lead 8-5. The Devils went on to add one more in the seventh and three in the eighth as eight Devils recorded RBI's in the win. Junior preseason All-American Travis Buck continued to swing a hot bat as he led the Devils once again with his 3-for-5 performance that included one run and one RBI.

Five other Devils also recorded a multi-hit game they included freshman Willy Fox (2-for-3, Run, 2 RBI), sophomore Seth Dhaenens (2-for-4, 2 RBI), senior Joey Hooft (2-for-5, 2 R, 2 RBI), freshman J.J. Sferra (3-for-5, 1 R), and freshman Andrew Romine (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI). Senior Jeff Larish and sophomore Colin Curtis were the two Devils to record an RBI after both finished the game 1-for-3 with one RBI.

Senior right-handed pitcher Ty Marotz recorded the win out of the bullpen as he pitched one scoreless inning that included one strikeout. Marotz is now 2-1 on the year. Junior right-hander Tony Barnette looked great on the mound in recording his first save of his Sun Devil career. Barnette allowed just one hit in three scoreless innings including four strikeouts.

The Devils return to action tomorrow night with another 6:30 p.m. game against the Bruins at Packard Stadium. Senior right-hander Jason Urquidez (5-3, 4.76 ERA) will be taking the mound for the Devils against Bruin starter Bryan Beck (0-6, 5.44 ERA).
