Sun Devils Blast Bruins

Pat Murphy's 20th ranked Sun Devils continued to play outstanding baseball Saturday night as they crushed the struggling Bruins 16-2. The victory gives the Devils their second straight Pac-10 series and improved their conference record to 8-3.

Overall the Devils improved to 27-15 on the year and remain in a tie for second place with USC in the Pac-10. The Devils have now won 21 of their last 27 games and are in great position to make a run for the conference title, which is a remarkable feat considering they started the year 6-9.

Offensively the Devils pounded out 18 hits as nine different Sun Devils recorded a hit. Junior outfielder Travis Buck continued to rip the ball going 4-for-5 with two runs scored. Buck as been on a tear as of late recording six straight multi-hit games. Freshman outfielder J.J. Sferra also recorded career-high four hits in the game. Sferra ended the day 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Three other Devils recorded more than one hit, senior Tuffy Gosewisch (2-for-5, 2 R, RBI) sophomore Seth Dhaenens (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI) and sophomore Zechry Zinicola (2-for-5 2 R, 2 RBI). Senior's Jeff Larish and Joey Hooft were also big contributors at the plate as each drove in two runs.

One the mound senior right-hander Jason Urquidez pitched a very solid game for the Devils. Urquidez gave up two runs on six hits while striking out five in six innings of work. Urquidez picked up his sixth win of the year to improve his record to 6-3. Junior left-hander Brett Bordes came in and shutdown the Bruins over the final three innings allowing just one hit while striking out four to pick up his second save of the season.

The Devils will look for the second consecutive sweep tomorrow as they finish the three game series with the Bruins in a 1 p.m. start at Packard Stadium. The Devils will send out sophomore right-hander Pat Bresnehan (3-3, 4.42 ERA) to the mound.
