The Devils were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead after junior right fielder Travis Buck stole home in the first inning. The Devils went on to add one more in the fourth and led 2-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning, but that's when things took a turn for the worse for the Devils. Junior left-hander Erik Averill had been throwing a solid game until the fourth, where he walked two batters before giving up a three-run homer to Beaver right fielder Mike Lissman with two outs in the inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning things only got worse for Averill as he gave up three straight singles to start the inning before being relieved by senior right-hander Ty Marotz. Marotz didn't fair much better as he also gave up three singles in the inning, which led to three more runs for the Beavers.
The Devils were able to battle back in the top of the seventh inning thanks to seniors Tuffy Gosewisch and Jeff Larish. Gosewisch cut the lead to 6-3 after driving a two-out single to right filed that scored sophomore shortstop Joe Persichina. Larish then stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run shot over the left-center field fence to cut the Beaver lead to just one run. Beaver reliever Kevin Gunderson, who was responsible for Larish's two-run homer, was able to calm down over the next two innings, as he was able to get the next six batters out to close the door on the Devils. Beaver starter Dallas Buck picked up the win for the Beavers to improve his record to 8-1 on the year. Averill was charged with the loss to drop to 7-3.
Offensively Jeff Larish led the Devils going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBI including his league leading 16th homerun. Larish's homer was also the only extra-base hit for the Devils as they managed just nine hits. He was also the only Sun Devil to record more than one hit in the game.
The Devils will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon as they send senior right-hander Jason Urquidez (6-3, 4.61 ERA) to the mound to face Beaver left-hander Anton Maxwell (7-0, 4.55 ERA), who has yet to lose on the season. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Oregon.
