Devils Grind Out Victory Over Beavers

The No. 17 Arizona State Sun Devils relied on solid pitching today in their 3-1 victory over the No. 6 Oregon State Beavers to even the series at a game apiece. Sun Devil starter Jason Urquidez (7-3, 4.34 ERA) came through big today for the Devils, in what some believed was a must win game, in order for Pat Murphy's squad to have a shot at the conference title.

Urquidez pitched 6.1 solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits while striking out three Beaver batters to improve his record to 7-3 on the season. Urquidez wouldn't have been able to do it if it weren't for the solid relief effort the Devils got form sophomore right-hander Zechry Zinicola. Zinicola came into the game in the seventh to get Urquidez and the Devils out of a bases loaded jam and went on to close out the game without allowing a hit in 2.2 innings of work. Zinicola picked up his third save of the year in the process. The win helped the Devils move back into a tie for second place in the Pac-10 at 10-4 and improved their overall record to 29-16 on the year. The Beavers dropped to 31-8 on the year and are also 10-4 in conference play.

Offensively the Devils recorded three runs on 11 hits in the game as they handed Beaver starter Anton Maxwell (7-1, 4.26 ERA) his first loss of the year. Five Devils recorded a multi-hit game led by leadoff hitter Colin Curtis who was 2-for-5 on the day including one RBI. Junior right fielder Travis Buck, senior catcher Tuffy Gosewisch, freshman designated hitter Willy Fox, and freshman shortstop Andrew Romine were the other Sun Devil players to record more than one hit in the win.

The Devils will have their hands full once again tomorrow as they square off against undefeated Beaver starter Jonah Nickerson (6-0, 1.15 ERA) in the rubber match of the three game series. The Devils will send out sophomore right-hander Pat Bresnehan (3-3, 4.91 ERA) to the mound in what could be very important game in deciding the Pac-10 champion as the regular season begins to wind down. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start at Goss Stadium in Corvallis Oregon.
