Lone Star Safety Loaded with Offers

The last athlete to come to Arizona State from Garland high school was no other than former basketball star Ike Diogu. The next Garland product to follow in those footsteps could be safety Del Howard, who has already caught the eye of many programs in and out of Texas.

"It's going great," said the 5-10 175 Del Howard about his recruiting with the Sun Devils. "They offered me a scholarship back in May, and had been in contact with me the whole time. I like the competitiveness of the program and I like the Pac-10." The safety mentioned that he's being recruited by ASU's defensive line coach Ted Monachino.

Howard isn't leaning towards any of the schools who already extended scholarship offers, and does not see himself committing early in the process. "I really don't have a list of favorites," he remarked. "I've received scholarship offers from Wisconsin, TCU, Minnesota, Mississippi State, Arizona, Baylor, Missouri, Kansas, Purdue…It would be nice to stay close to home but it won't affect my final decision." Howard added that the only official visit he already set up was with Minnesota in the beginning of December.

The safety is a two-year starter, and as a junior he recorded 87 tackles. According to his coach Mickey Moss, Howard runs the 40 at a 4.45 and has a 31.5-inch vertical. "I'm an aggressive player that always tries to get to the ball," said Howard as he described his skills. "I have speed and I just love the game. One thing I do need to work on is controlling myself. I need to do when to be aggressive and when not to be."

Howard said that ASU has been recruiting him as a safety, but that many other schools are recruiting him at cornerback. "I don't have one position that I like more than the other. Whatever position can make me a better player and get me on the field is fine by me."

The safety said that he was able to follow ASU last season, and was impressed by what he saw. "I watched a couple of their games on TV. They have a good quarterback, good defense, and I like how their defense attacks the ball."

Howard has already qualified with 2.8 GPA and a 71 score on the ACT.
