Tempe CB Garnering Interest In and Out-of-State

In recent years, Tempe's Corona Del Sol has not enjoyed much success in the tough 5A Central league. Nevertheless, all that changed last year when the Aztecs were undefeated in their division, and had one of their best seasons in recent years. Matt Mosley was part of that turnaround, and his contributions did not go unnoticed by the university in his backyard, as well as other schools in the region.

"Arizona State offered me a scholarship right after their team camp," said the 5-11 183 Matt Mosley. "They were my first offer. I did expect to get a scholarship offer from them but not this early. The ASU coaches were at my school's spring practice, and I also went to their team camp the year before." Mosley stated that Oregon State and Montana offered him scholarships as well, and BYU is reportedly about to follow suit.

Mosley was a league honorable mention, as he racked up 48 tackles and three sacks from his outside linebacker positions. However, now that he runs a 4.4 he'll be featured in the secondary and continue to play wide receiver in the 2005 season. "I have good speed, quickness, good vision and good hands," he said as he described his skills. "I do need to run crisper routes." He added that the Sun Devils are looking at him at both corner and receiver, and that the later is his preferred position.

Playing at school located just ten minutes from the ASU campus, brings up the inevitable question of whether the hometown school has the early edge in his recruiting. Mosley's response is non-committal. "I like all the coaches there," he commented. "Coach Nordquist, Coach Koetter, Coach Jackson, Coach Carrier…I love the facilities, and it's nice that it's so close. It would be fun to play there and be the hometown hero, but my parents and I talked and we want to look elsewhere before I make my decision. I don't think I will decide until after the season"

Mosley reports a 3.2 GPA and will take the college entrance exam for the first time in October. He expects big things to come this coming season as the Aztecs look to keep their momentum going. "We expect to repeat as champions," he said. "We're losing some seniors but we have a solid group of guys coming back. I'm gonna have a larger role on the team. Besides playing cornerback and wide receiver, I'm also gonna play running back and special teams. I'm real excited for the season."

Is there no place like home? Matt Mosley should be able to answer that question, hopefully to the delight of the maroon and gold, in a few months…
