Baseball Weekend Wrap-Up

The 11th ranked ASU (16-8) baseball team took on a tough Oklahoma Sooner (15-5) baseball team this past weekend. After dropping a disappointing game to New Mexico State on Tuesday, the Devils were looking for redemption against OU, but would only win 1 game out of the 3 game series.

Friday Mike Esposito (4-3) started the Friday game for the Devils, and gave a strong performance despite the tough loss. He struck out a career high 10 Sooners in 6 innings of work in the 6-3 loss. After an error plagued 3rd inning for the Devils that resulted in 4 runs for OU, it shut the door on the game for the Devils. J.J. Jackson came in relief, and gave up just 1 run in 3 innings pitched.

SS Ian Kinsler committed 2 errors in the 3rd inning that killed the Devils. After a 3 run homerun by RF Chris Jakubauskas, the Sooners were up for good. 1B Jeremy West and 3B Dustin Pedroia were the only Devils to have a multi-hit game. 1 of West's hits was his 6th homerun of the year, on a 420-foot bomb to left center in the 4th inning. He would also score his 2nd run of the game in the 8th inning off of a Pedroia sacrifice fly.

Saturday Robbie McClellan (5-2), who was the Pac 10 Pitcher of the Week, had another strong pitching performance for the Devils. He pitched a solid 8 innings, giving up 4 runs off of 7 hits. Ryan Schroyer closed out the game and earned his first save of the year as the Devils won today's game 6-4.

ASU started the game off strong once again by scoring 2 runs in their half of the 1st inning. Dustin Pedroia started off the inning with a single to centerfield. Jeremy West would single to right field, scoring Pedroia. Next up was DH Ryan McKenna, who drove in LF Rod Allen on his sacrifice fly to center field.

OU took the lead in the top of the 5th with a 3 run inning, but the Devils would storm back to reclaim the lead with a 3 run inning in the bottom of the 6th. Rod Allen started off the inning with a double down the left field line, and would score off a Jeremy West double to right field. Then, West would add to the run total off of a Jon Sheaffer single. Then 2B Sergio Garcia, who transferred to ASU from Oklahoma, did his part by driving in Sheaffer on a single to left field.

In the bottom of the 8th, Freshmen Jeff Larish tripled to right center. This was Larish's first game as a Devil, and would take full advantage of the situation by going 3 for 4 with 1 run scored in his debut. Sheaffer would drive in Larish on the next at bat on a single up the middle.

Sunday Bryce Kartler started the Sunday game and would last 5 2/3 innings giving up 3 runs. The bullpen combo of Mark Sopko and Ryan Schroyer could not stop the Sooners hitting, and gave up 4 runs.

The Devils got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when CF Doug Schutt singled to the short stop, and would score when RF Andre Ethier hit a double down the left field line. Later on in the Devil half of the 6th inning, Ethier would score off of a Rod Allen double. After OU scored 4 runs in the top of the 8th, ASU came back and scored 3 runs. Jeremy West tripled to right center, scoring Ethier and Sheaffer. West would later score on a Rod Allen sacrifice fly. But the Devil's rally would fall short, and they would end up losing 7-5.

ASU travels to Tucson next weekend to face Arizona (19-9). The Wildcats faced UNC-Wilmington this past weekend and won 2 out of 3.
