Final Scrimmage Features Offensive Explosion

The ASU defense intercepted a pass in the early minutes of the game. Nevertheless, it wasn't a sign of things to come. Unlike the scrimmage last Saturday, Camp Tontozona's ending scrimmage was all about the Sun Devil offense and the eight touchdowns it scored.

Arizona State's ground attack set the pace for the players in maroon, as Rudy Burgess and Keegan Herring scored the first couple of touchdowns in the game. Once again, Herring displayed a lethal combination of powerful running and blinding speed. Cornel Canidate had the longest run of the morning, 37 yards, and scored once, as did Randy Hill. Leo Talavou and Mike Pollak played at left guard, as Stephen Berg sat out the scrimmage.

14 different receivers caught passes from the ASU signal callers. Sam Keller passed for two touchdowns, and shook off that early pick by Josh Golden. Rudy Carpenter nay have had his best outing ever on a practice field, passing for two scores as well, with no picks and 61% completion rate. Nate Kimbrough, who has already been excelling as a returner on special teams, paced all receivers with six catches for 107 yards, including a scrimmage-high 50-yard reception. Touchdowns were scored by Derek Hagan, Brent Miller, Jamaal Lewis and Jeff Gray.

While the defense had a hard time creating turnovers, they did come up with nice defensive stops. Will Kofe had two sacks, a tackle for loss, and a touchdown-saving pass breakup in the end zone. Dale Robinson had two tackles for loss and half a sack. Some of the offense's success can be attributed to a depleted defensive unit that was missing starters Jamar Williams, Dewayne Hollyfield, Kyle Caldwell, Robert James, Josh Barrett, and R.J. Oliver.

"I'm really proud of our defense today," said Head Coach Dirk Koetter following the scrimmage. "We had a lot of guys on defense out. We are at the end of ten days here. You can tell that our legs a little bit tired. The fact that we made it through without any serious injuries, and as much work that we have done – I think we're right on track."

The team will enjoy a day off on Saturday, practice on Sunday, and be off again on Monday the first day of classes. With less than two weeks left before the season opener against Temple, practiced will naturally focus on the game plan for that contest.
