Koetter Not Concern with Team's Mindset

Answer the Scratch is the Sun Devils' mission statement. Following the heartbreaking 35-31 loss to LSU, Arizona State will be well served to act on that motto as they prepare for their last non-conference game against Northwestern this Saturday. Their head coach believes that this will actually occur, and doesn't foresee any difficulties bouncing back at home this weekend.

"I don't think that will be a problem," said Dirk Koetter on the mindset of his squad. "When you're coming off a loss, you're hungry to get back into the win column. Playing at home, I know the crowd will get into it…these guys will come to play on Saturday."

Tuesday's practice ended on a lively note, as the conditioning period took on a competitive nature. The defense won two out of three sprints, and rubbed it in the offenses' face as that group was forced to run. While the Sun Devil skipper wouldn't characterize tonight's session as spirited, he was pleased with some of its aspects.

"On Tuesdays you're installing a new game plan, because the players were off on Monday," Koetter remarked. "We made some progress today. We put the game plan in, and they were some positives there. But I think when you're coming off a game like we did last week, you kinda have to slowly build it up to Saturday. You don't have to play the game on Tuesday."

No one will confuse Northwestern to be in the same caliber as the Sun Devils' opponent last Saturday, but that's not to say that the Wildcats won't be challenging to prepare for. "The tough thing is that both their offense and defense are going to give us looks we don't see that often," Koetter commented. "On offense they run that spread, kind of like Utah type stuff, which we will see against Oregon down the road, and their quarterback is a good player. Defensively, they play a lot of that 3-5 stack, which we don't see much of. So they do give some difficult looks from a preparation standpoint, but there are all things we're going to see down the road, so you might as well get ready for them now."
