Baseball Weekend Wrap Up

The 16th ranked ASU baseball team traveled to Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles this past weekend to play UCLA. ASU improved to 24-13 on the season after winning 2 out of 3 from the Bruins.


On Friday the Devils played in their first extra inning game of the season. They ended up winning 4-3 after 11 innings. Mike Esposito got the start and had a decent outing. He lasted 7 innings, giving up 3 runs and 5 hits. Ryan Schroyer (3-1) had a dominant performance in his relief role and earned the win. He shut out the Bruins in the 4 innings of work that he pitched.

For the 21st time this season, the Devils scored in the first inning. After a trio of hits by Steve Garrabrants, Jeff Larish, and Andre Ethier, the Devils got on the board first when Garrabrants crossed the plate. Down 3-1, the Devils came back with 2 runs in the top of the 7th, when Jeff Larish hit a 2 run home run. In the top of the 11th, Dustin Pedroia singled to center field. Next up was Rod Allen, who singled to left field, scoring Pedroia and giving the Devils the lead for good.


After UCLA came out with 4 runs in the 1st inning, they never looked back and won the game 10-2. Bryce Kartler (2-4) started and would only last 4 1/3 innings, giving up 5 runs. Aaron Klusman came in relief and did not record an out after he faced 2 batters, giving up 2 hits. Jered Liebeck then came in and gave up 5 runs in 3 2/3 innings pitched.

With UCLA up 4-0 after 1 inning, ASU scored 2 runs in the top of the 2nd off of a Steve Garrabrants single that scored Sergio Garcia and Dustin Pedroia. The Devils would not score any more runs and ended up losing 10-2.


After a tough loss on Saturday, the Devil's bats would not be silenced today in the 15-2 win over the Bruins. Robbie McClellan (7-2) had another solid performance lasting 8 innings giving up 2 runs. Mark Sopko closed out the game in the 9th inning for the Devils.

ASU got on the board in the 2nd inning with a 2 out rally and scored 4 runs. After ASU took a 7-0 lead, UCLA scored with 1 run in the bottom of the 3rd, but ASU came back with 4 more runs in the top of the 4th. Steve Garrabrants, Andre Ethier, Jon Sheaffer, and Cesar Castillo all had multi-hit games. Garrabrants came through huge with 4 RBI's in the game. Bruin Pitcher Casey Janssen only lasted 2 2/3 innings, giving up 7 runs.

The series win gives ASU their 8th straight Pac 10 series win dating back to last April.

ASU returns home next weekend to face California at HoHoKam Stadium.
