Butte Linebacker Favors the Sun Devils

Garrett Judah, a preseason all-state selection from Butte (Calif.) junior college, began his official visit circuit with a trip to the Sun Devils this past weekend. Will this be his only recruiting trip? Devils Digest sat down with the linebacker and talked about his impressions of the maroon and gold.

"I enjoyed my visit," said the 6-4 228 Judah who's being recruited by offensive line Coach Brent Myers. "It was a fun weekend. Unfortunately they lost, but it was still a good visit. (defensive coordinator) Coach Miller was good to talk to. His list of players that he coached in college is impressive. Players like Ray Lewis…that's a Hall of Famer right there."

"I liked the campus, the weather…the facilities were real nice," he continued. "Loren Howard was my host. Man, he's a big strong guy. It's great that he'll be playing on the defensive line next year. I really like him and the other linemen coming in. That's gonna be a real strength next year." Judah, who will be a mid-year transfer, has been an early target of the Arizona State staff since the summer, when they offered him a scholarship.

Judah occupies the middle linebacker role for the Roadrunners, and mentioned that the Sun Devils are recruiting him for the Will linebacker position (a hybrid safety/linebacker role). "My strong points are my blitzing, I'm elusive (runs a 4.6), and I'm a sure tackler," he said as he self-assessed his skills. "I could get stronger. It's hard to maintain your weight all the time. Right now I'm on the tuna and Top Ramen diet (laughs). In the beginning of the season I came in at 235, and now I'm at 228"

Judah spent his prep career at Sunset (Ore.) High School. "I had some grade issues, and after talking to some folks I decided to go to Portland State," he recalled. I greyshirted and then redshirted my second year. When I was there, I realized that I needed to go somewhere else and get my grades up. So I went to Butte." As a result of the redshirt year, Judah will be a two-for-two player in terms of eligibility.

Butte, located in Oroville, Calif., had a bye week this past weekend and based on Judah's remarks, there's something to be said about the fact that he journeyed to the Valley of the Sun a few days ago. "I can visit a lot of other schools, but I don't know if I will," he commented. "Every week now I have a game, so I can't visit anyone until December, and I'm planning to sign in December. Boise State, Kansas, and TCU are other schools I'm interested in. Arizona State is my favorite. I need to talk to my parents and coach before I make my commitment. I'm probably gonna make a decision later on this month."
