Baseball Weekend Wrap-Up

The 17th ranked Arizona State University baseball team took on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame this past weekend. However, they were only able to play 1 of the 2 games of the series, with the 2nd game being rained out on Saturday and on Sunday. Coach Pat Murphy returned to South Bend for the first time since taking the Arizona State job. He coached Notre Dame from 1988-1994.

Robbie McClellan (7-3) was roughed up early, giving up 4 runs in the 2nd inning to dig a hole for the Devils. He pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up 6 runs while striking out 5. Bryce Kartler and Mark Sopko both came in relief, giving up 3 runs combined.

After trailing 4-0, the Devils came back with 4 runs in the top of the 5th. Cesar Castillo started off the 5th with a double to right center. Castillo would score off of a Steve Garrabrants sacrifice fly to left field. Later in the inning, Jon Sheaffer would score when Dustin Pedroia reached on a fielding error. Jeff Larish came up with a key hit later on, scoring Ryan McKenna and Jeremy West.

In the Irish half of the 5th, they would score 3 runs to take a 7-3 lead. Notre Dame would add 2 runs and ended up winning 9-4.

The Devil's key mistakes were the 11 men left on base and the 4 errors they committed. The Devils fell to 26-16 with the loss, after beating Oklahoma last Tuesday. They face New Mexico State on Tuesday before getting the next weekend off. They are 1-1 this year against New Mexico State.
