Late Push Puts ASU in Top Three

Linebacker Travis Goethel may have not been on the Sun Devils' radar until recently, but once the ASU coaches started their recruitment they quickly secured an official visit. Who are the other schools Goethel is considering and will Tempe be his last recruiting trip? Devils Digest talked to the linebacker and got the latest.

"Arizona State has been recruiting me for a few weeks," said the said the 6-2.5 215 Travis Goethel. "I know the program, and I know they have a good team. My friend Thomas Altieri plays on the offensive line there, and he told me stuff about them."

Along with the Sun Devils, two other schools are receiving serious consideration right now. "I like Washington and Utah," stated the Vista (Calif.) standout. "Seattle is a very nice city and I like the school. I believe that their football team is on the rise. Utah is already a good program, and they also have a nice location. I'm looking for a place where I feel comfortable with the coaches, players and the rest of the people there." The linebacker also visited Oregon State, but didn't list them as a serious suitor.

Goethel is scheduled to visit ASU on the 20th, and it remains unclear if he will take any other visits after that one. "I'm not sure if I'm gonna visit USC," he explained. "They haven't offered me a scholarship yet. There's a small chance I'll visit San Diego State, but I'm not sure." He did however add that he does plan to make a decision "right after the ASU visit."

In 2005, Goethel collected over 100 tackles, eight sacks, and five interceptions (including two that were returned for touchdowns). The linebacker was named the San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year. "I can read the field, run fast and tackle well," he said of his skills. "I do want to get faster, stronger, and get off the blocks better."

Goethel is academically qualified.
