Goethel Pledges to ASU

During his recruiting with the Sun Devils, the Vista (Calif.) linebacker had mentioned that he liked the fact that Arizona State was only five hours by car from his home. It probably wasn't distance that made his heart grow fond of the maroon and gold, but an enjoyable visit that just ended yesterday sealed the deal for Travis Goethel.

"Coach Koetter and Coach Fidler were at my house tonight," said the 6-foot-2.5, 215-pound linebacker. "I liked my visit, but I wanted to talk to my parents first before I commit. There wasn't one specific thing I liked about the visit, but I just had fun the whole weekend. It feels good to get this behind me. It's gonna be a fun week between now and signing day."

Travis Goethel had over 100 tackles (including 14 for a loss) in his senior year, as well as eight sacks, five interceptions (two for touchdowns), one fumble caused and one recovered. He mentioned that the coaches are envisioning him playing the SAM (i.e. strong side) linebacker, "but they think I can play all three positions. It doesn't matter to me."

Goethel appears to be qualified with a 3.0 GPA and an 890 score on the SAT. His commitment is solid as he has canceled an in-home visit that was scheduled with the Washington coaches tonight.
