Devils Blasted in Season Opener

Last night, the Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team hosted the Cal State Northridge Matadors to kick off the 2006 season. Well, things didn't start out too well for Pat Murphy and squad, as the Matadors handed the Devils a 13-2 loss in front of 3,059 fans at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.

The Devils took an early 1-0 lead behind the bat and strong pitching of true freshman Ike Davis (0-1). Davis drove in the Devils first run in the bottom of the first inning with a hard line drive to left that scored leftfielder Ryan Sontag. Sontag got things started with a double to center in his very first at bat as a Sun Devil, and showed plenty of hustle on the hit, diving into second in what would have been a single for most players. Davis had looked good through the first four innings. However, the wheels fell off in the fifth, as the Matadors put up an eight spot on the scoreboard. Davis looked dominant until the fifth, allowing just three hits and no runs while recording five strikeouts. In the fifth Davis got into some trouble after allowing a couple of hits and hitting a batter.

The bullpen didn't fair well at all in Davis' relief. Tony Barnette, Brady Martinez, Frank Mesa, and Josh Satow combined to give up nine runs in 3.2 innings pitched. The Devils had opportunities to get out of the inning, but the calls and bounces just weren't going their way last night. As far as Davis goes, I think he'll be just fine. He's got some good stuff and I believe he'll bounce back the next time he takes the mound.

The Devils weren't just struggling on the mound, they couldn't get it going at the plate either. The Devils were held to just six hits on the night, led by Davis' 2-for-4 performance, which included a double and a RBI. Matador right-hander Craig Baker (1-0) picked up the win, as he allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven in 6.2 innings of work. Northridge right fielder Brett Blumenthal led the Matadors at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs and five RBI's including a three run homerun off Mesa in the sixth.

The Devils will look to rebound today as junior right-hander Zechry Zinicola takes the mound for the Devils. The game is scheduled for a 1:00 pm first pitch at Brock Ballpark.
