Devils Bounce Back, Topple Matadors

The Arizona State Sun Devil baseball team got things back on track today, as they defeated the Cal State Northridge Matadors 9-3. Willy Fox led the Devils (1-1), as he blasted two homeruns on the day. The bullpen also bounced back and pitched well to preserve the victory for the teams first win in 2006.

The Devils struck first in the bottom of the second after Fox drove a solo shot over the leftfield fence to put the Devils up 1-0. Fox wasn't done yet, in the very next inning he hit another deep ball to left center, this time driving in three runs. Fox finished the day 2-for-4 with two runs, and four RBI's. The Matadors battled back scoring three times in the top of the fourth off Sun Devil starter Zechry Zinicola. Zinicola lasted just 3.1 innings, while allowing three runs (one earned), on three hits, and a walk. The bullpen took over from there, and gave up just one more run over the final five innings. Junior right-hander Matt Trink (1-0) picked up the win in relief for the Devils, the first of his Sun Devil career.

The Devils added a run in both the fifth and sixth inning before handing it over to senior left-hander Brett Bordes. After a perfect seventh inning of work, Bordes ran into some trouble in the eight. The Matadors loaded up the bases with nobody out, but the threat was ended abruptly by a play you don't see very often, the elusive triple play. Matador third baseman, Todd Shelton, lined a hard hit ball at Sun Devil second baseman, Eric Sogard, who flipped the ball to shortstop Joe Persichina, Persichina then fired the ball to third baseman C.J. Retherford, and just as fast as the inning begin, it was now over. Bordes earned his first save on the year for his efforts.

The Devils added some insurance runs in the eight, as sophomore leftfielder Ryan Sontag drilled a bases loaded to out double in the gap to clear the bases. Sontag, a Michigan State transfer, showed why he was the Big-10 Freshman of the Year last year, as he went 2-for-3 with two runs, a walk, and three RBI's.

The rubber-match will take place tomorrow afternoon as the Devils and Matadors conclude their three game series with a scheduled 1 pm first pitch.
