Devils Win NCAA Opener

The ASU baseball team defeated the University of San Diego 6-3 in the 1st round of the Mesa Regional. They will face Houston tomorrow, who blanked New Mexico State 9-0.

Jered Liebeck got the start for the Devils and lasted 3 innings giving up 3 runs and 3 hits. The bullpen trio of Mark Sopko, Carlos Arguello, and Ryan Schroyer pitched the final 6 innings, not giving up a run.

San Diego took a 2-0 lead in the 3rd inning, but ASU cut the lead in half when Jeremy West hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Cesar Castillo. The Toreros would add another run in their half of the 4th, but ASU would come up with a run in the 5th inning when Jeff Larish hit a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Steve Garrabrants. In the 6th inning, the Devils would add 2 more runs off of a Rod Allen home run and a Dustin Pedroia single that scored Cesar Castillo's 2nd run of the game. That increased the lead to the final score of 6-3.

The Devils face the top seeded Houston Cougars Sunday at 2pm.
