Devils Survive Huskies' Late Rally

The Arizona State Sun Devils earned their fourth straight victory yesterday afternoon, as they defeated the Northern Illinois Huskies by a score of 9-6. The 12th ranked Devils (4-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning after freshman DH Ike Davis laced a base clearing double to right-center field. The Devils added four more runs in the fourth, thanks to some Husky errors and a two-run double off the bat of junior second baseman Seth Dhaenens.

It looked as if the Devils would cruise to a blowout victory after entering the ninth with a 9-1 advantage, but the Husky bats came alive scoring five times before junior closer Zechry Zinicola came in to close the door on the Husky comeback.

The Devils had 10 hits on the day led by Dhaenens, left fielder Rocky Laguna, and right fielder Colin Curtis, who each recorded two hits. Dhaenens, who was making his first start of the year, finished the day 2-for-5 with a run and three RBI's. Laguna was also making his first start of the new season and came through for the Devils, going 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Curtis looks to be back on track at the plate, as he went 2-for-5 from the leadoff spot with two runs scored. Both of Curtis' hits were doubles.

On the mound, freshman lefty Drew Bowman struggled with his control in his first career collegiate start. Bowman only lasted three innings on the day, giving up four hits while walking three. However, Bowman did get the big out when he needed to and didn't allow any runs to cross the plate. Bowman was relieved by another left-handed freshman and local valley product Jeff Urlaub. Urlaub was solid in relief, as he earned his first career win as a Devil after allowing jus one run on two hits and a walk while striking out two in three innings of work. Zinicola earned his second save of the year after ending the Husky rally in the ninth.

The Devils look for the sweep and their fifth straight victory, as they host the Huskies for the third and final game of the series today at Brock Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 pm. Junior right-hander Pat Bresnehan will take the mound for the Devils.
