Devils Swept in Coca Cola Classic

SURPRISE, AZ—The Devils bats finally showed up but the pitching did not and led to the first ever winless Coca Cola Classic for the Sun Devils. The Nevada Wolf Pack beat Arizona State 12-8 in the final game of the fourth Annual Coca Cola Classic in Surprise, Ariz.

Once again a big inning did the Sun Devils in as they gave up 6 runs in the 5th inning. Drew Bowman started off with 2 consecutive strikeouts to start the game but by the end of the second inning he had given up 3 runs. Brett Bordes came in and couldn't do much better as he gave up 3 runs himself.

Tony Barnette, Brady Martinez, Zechery Zinicola and Jeff Urlab all came in, in relief efforts but couldn't fare much better giving up a collective 6 runs between them. Sophomore Willy Fox had a terrific game on the offensive end going 3-4 with a triple. Colin Curtis and Brett Wallace both went 2-4 in a losing effort for the Devils.

Coach Pat Murphy had to hand the reigns over to assistant coach Jay Sferra for the game due to the fact he was issued a one game suspension for his argument between himself and umpire Steve Corvi.

Coach Murphy didn't have much to say about the game afterwards but had a few thoughts about the pitching staff. "We don't have a true starting pitcher right now," Murphy continued, "All of our guys are relief pitchers." When asked about how he feels the team is doing right now Coach Murphy said, "I thought we would be 9-0 right now." He also added that he though the team wasn't clicking on all cylinders. Coach Murphy also advised the Sun Devil faithful, "Don't quit on us yet."

Next up for the Devils is a 3 game series at home next weekend against the Houston Cougars starting Friday at 7pm
