Devils Offense Slams Cougars

TEMPE, AZ—We like Ike. Again. Highly touted freshman Ike Davis led the potent Sun Devils offense going 3-5 with two doubles and two RBI's to beat the Houston Cougars 11-1. On the defensive end Freshman Jeff Urlaub weaved a gem only giving up 5 hits over 7 2/3 innings.

The Sun Devils had been beaten all year by one single big inning. Now it was their turn to fire back. During the 6th inning the Devil's offense came alive and scored 9 runs. Willy Fox walked to lead off the inning and was driven in with a double from Davis. Preston Paramore then scored Davis with a single to right field. Coach pat Murphy then put in Eric Sogard to pinch hit for Frank Mesa. It paid off quite nicely. Sogard hit a 375 foot blast over the right field wall onto Rural Road to score Paramore and C.J Retherford.

The Sun Devils continued to show signs of life in the inning when Willy Fox beat out a single to score J.J. Sferra. Ike was back up again and hit a single to score another run for ASU and Joe Persichina crushed a bases loaded single to score two more.

Houston pitcher Brad Lincoln was pulled halfway through the sixth after throwing a terrific 5 innings only giving up one run. Urlaub was pulled after 7 2/3 for Brett Bruneel who finished off the inning. Matt Trink then came in the 9th and finished out the game for the Devils.

Arizona State tied their season high of 14 hits and will finish out the series Sunday at 1pm and Winkles Field at Packard Stadium, Brock Ballpark.
