WR Signee Hospitalized Following Shooting

Angelo Richardson, California's top junior college wide receiver and one the marquee names of the Sun Devils' 2006 recruiting class, has been hospitalized since last weekend in a Bay Area hospital. Through various sources, Devils Digest has learned some details surrounding the incident and has talked to Santa Rosa Junior College Coach Keith Simons about the incident. Additionally, ASU Head Coach Dirk Koetter made a statement regarding Richardson's injury.

Reportedly, Angelo Richardson approached a man in the act of stealing Richardson's car, and during that confrontation the wide receiver was shot. We have heard varying reports on the severity of his injury and as of now it would be speculative at best to provide any concrete facts relating his prognosis. We do however know that he's currently in the Intensive Care Unit of a Bay Area hospital.

"Right now our focus is on Angelo and his family," said Koetter in a statement. "We hope he can make a full recovery. Our thoughts and prayers are with Angelo and his family."

When contacted by Devils Digest, Coach Simons said that Richardson was: "Doing better," and that "It's up in the air" whether the wide receiver can resume his studies this semester and/or play football this fall.

In his Letter of Intent Day press conference, Koetter said that: "Angelo is the most exciting wide receiver we've had here since Shaun McDonald…this guy can light it up. Everyone in the country was on him. He had huge numbers and could have gone anywhere. He wanted to play with Sam Keller, who was his high school quarterback for one year at San Ramon. That was the key…we were fortunate enough to get this guy."

Richardson, who was tabbed as the likely replacement to departing senior and all-time Pac-10 record holder Derek Hagan, collected 1,334 yards on 93 catches in 2005. He set school records in many categories, and his 18 touchdowns led all of JC players in California.
