Hot Hitting Sooners Down Devils

The luck ran out for the #11 Arizona State Sun Devils tonight, as two late comeback attempts fell short in the 15-8 loss to the #21 Oklahoma Sooners.

The Sooners (18-5) were spraying the ball to all parts of the field the entire game, scoring 15 runs on 13 hits. The assault began early, as Sun Devil starter, Tony Barnette (0-1), was rattled for three runs in the first and one in the second. Things didn't get much better for reliever Drew Bowman, who was charged for three runs without recording a single out in the third inning. All three runs were unearned, thanks to three costly errors by the Devils.

Two of the errors were throwing errors charged to Bowman, who was trying to throw runners out at second and first on two consecutive bunt attempts. The second was the most costly, as Bowman's errant throw went down the first base line bringing in two Sooner base runners. Miscues were the Devils downfall on the night. They committed a total of four errors, and that's not including the two passed balls and wild pitch.

After the top half of the sixth, the Devils found themselves in a daunting 9-1 hole. The Devils battled back, scoring three runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to cut the lead to 9-7. That would be as close as the Devils would get the rest of the night, as the Sooners answered back with five runs in the top half of the eighth, including a three run bomb by Sooner DH Joe Dunigan.

Sooner starter, Steven Guerra, kept the Devils off balance for most of the night, with a good combination of fastballs and off speed pitches. He earned the victory for the Sooners, improving his record to 7-0 on the season.

Outfielder Rocky Laguna went deep for the Devils after coming into the game late as a replacement. Laguna finished the game 1-for-1 with two runs, a RBI, a walk and the solo bomb. Infielder Eric Sogard and DH Ike Davis also scored a pair of runs on the night. Sogard also drove in one run on an RBI double, and Davis finished 2-for-5 at the plate including a double.

The Devils will look to bounce back in the rubber match and final game of the series tomorrow, which is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at Packard Stadium.
