Devils Drop Series Finale

For the second night in a row, the eighteenth ranked Devils and fourth ranked Beavers battled until the late innings of the game, but this time it was the Beavers who prevailed as the victors by a score of 9-8. The Devils looked as if they might pull off the sweep after building an early 7-3 lead, but the Beaver bats proved to be too much this time, as both teams battled back and forth until the last inning.

The two teams carried a seven all tie going into the eighth inning. In the top of the eighth, the Beavers took an 8-7 advantage off Sun Devil reliever Zechry Zinicola. The Devils tied things up in the bottom half of the inning after Andrew Romine led off the inning with a single and later scored on an Eric Sogard sac-fly. In the ninth, the Devils were just an out away from going into the final frame all square, but an error by second baseman, and the hero of last night's game, Seth Dhaenens led to an unearned run, which proved to be the game clincher.

The win helped the Beavers maintain a two game lead in the Pac 10 with a 12-6, while the Devils dropped to 10-8 and 32-17 overall. Errors turned out to be the story of the game for the Devils. The Devils committed four errors on the day, which led to five unearned runs and ultimately to a tough loss. Freshman sluggers, Ike Davis and Brett Wallace, each went deep for the Devils. Davis is now tied for the team lead with Eric Sogard with seven homeruns and Wallace's two-run bomb was his fourth of the season. Davis' homerun also tied him for the freshman RBI record of 58 with former Sun Devil great Casey Meyers.

The Devils will look to keep pace with the Beavers for the conference title, as they travel down south to face conference foe and interstate rival University of Arizona Wildcats. The two teams will begin their three game series on Friday at Kindall Field down in Tucson.
