First Time in the Coliseum

We all know about the game by now. It was a well fought battle by the Sun Devils and the men from Troy. An ASU victory would have capped off a terrific weekend but what can you do. For some people it was their first time in the Los Angeles Olympic Coliseum. I was one of those people.

To start a few of us walked through the campus down to the stadium. We were amazed at the tailgating scene. There were people lined up everywhere, drinking, laughing, grilling, and all on the campus. My only thought was, "I can't wait until Arizona State can do something like that." A group of ASU fans decided to set up shop in the middle of the USC fans which was a welcomed sight as we passed by them. Next we headed to the tailgate set up in the Science Center. It was well done and we had a good time. The decorations were great and the free pom-poms were nice as well. We also ran into former ASU wide-out Matt Miller. He was very excited about the game and talked to us for a bit.

We finally made our way to the Coliseum. What a site. The atmosphere around the stadium was terrific. In one area Traveler the horse was on display for pictures and petting. Another area had tons of RV's set up with tailgates and a third area we walked by we passed two USC football players in full pads headed into the stadium.

Once the game started the tradition seen throughout the stadium was amazing. From the retired jerseys to the Olympic torch it was a mesmerizing sight. It was interesting to see something like the Trojan come out to plant the sword into the ground or Traveler roam the sidelines. ASU is a school not exactly built on actual historical events such as USC with the Trojan Yell or Fight On sign but it would be nice to see things like that incorporated within our football games. Honestly I don't even know exactly what it could be but I assume something with its roots in Native American culture would be interesting to see.

As the game played out it was stunning to watch us come back from a 21-0 deficit. After Keno Walter-White's interception return for a touchdown a USC fan close to us said, "Is this happening right now? Is this really happening?" The atmosphere in the ASU section in the second half was unreal. Although the Devils didn't win it was an amazing time and hopefully the Sun Devils can rebound and get a win at home for Homecoming this Saturday.
