Newcomer Report

The Sun Devil offense blossomed into a balanced attack against the Stanford Cardinal as the Sun Devils notched their first conference win of the season. Some of the newcomers were part on the plethora of scoring on Saturday.

Junior college transfer Ryan Torain continues to be one of head coach Dirk Koetter's building blocks on offense. Torain chipped in with 90 of ASU's 206 yards on the ground in the 38-3 win. The junior had a pair of touchdowns, scoring once on the ground and also on a 27-yard pass from quarterback Rudy Carpenter in the first quarter. Freshman tailback Dimitri Nance carried the ball 7 times for 39 yards and a touchdown, the first score in his young collegiate career. Nance also caught a pass for ten yards.

Freshman quarterback Danny Sullivan saw some extended action in the fourth quarter. Sullivan completed 3 of his 4 passes for 15 yards in what was really his first real chance to throw the ball this season. Sophomore transfer Dane Guthrie, a reserve tight end, caught 2 balls for 11 yards.

Not to be outdone by Carpenter and the rest of the offense, the Sun Devil defense also rose to the occasion on Homecoming weekend, holding the Cardinal to just 145 yards of total offense. Freshman linebacker Travis Goethel followed up a solid game against USC last week with a five tackle performance. Goethel was second only to senior lineman Kyle Caldwell in tackles for the game. Both of freshman linebacker Mike Nixon's tackles were for losses, one of them being his second quarterback sack of the season.

Junior college transfer Justin Tryon made another start at cornerback, this time opposite versatile junior Rudy Burgess. Burgess made the start due to inexperienced depth at the position after junior Chris Baloney went down with a quad injury. Tryon finished with 3 stops. Freshman safety Ryan McFoy also recorded his second interception of the season.

Defensive line transfers Michael Marquardt and Tranell Morant each notched a tackle against Stanford. Marquardt returned to the starting lineup after missing the USC game due to an injury.

Jonathan Johnson made a brief appearance in the 4th quarter, punting the ball for 37 yards.
