Erickson Hired as ASU's New Head Coach

On Saturday night, University of Idaho Athletic Director Rob Spear told the Spokesman Review (Spokane, Wash.) newspaper that the Vandals' current head coach is Tempe bound to sign a contract with the Sun Devils as their new head football coach.

"He's gone," Spear told the Spokesman Review newspaper. "He said he's going to take the job and he's going to leave tomorrow on a private plane (for Arizona)." Spear added that Erickson's representatives were putting the final touches to his contract detail with Arizona State on Saturday. The article mentioned that Erickson's assistants Dan Cozzetto, who coached at ASU from 1993-99, running backs coach Jamie Christian and assistant head coach Gregg Smith are likely to follow Erickson and be on his staff at ASU.

Erickson sports a 149-64-1 record in 18 seasons as a college head coach. He won two national championships with the University of Miami in 1989 and 1991, and has helped turn around ASU's Pac-10 for Oregon State earlier this decade. The Sun Devils will reportedly pay a $150,000 buyout fee to Idaho.

It remains unclear if a press conference officially introducing Erickson as ASU's new head coach will take place Sunday or Monday.
