Newcomer Report

If the Devils are to have a successful 2002 campaign, their young talent will have to step up and perform. ASU responded well after last week's let down in Lincoln. The 38-2 victory over Division 1-AA opponent Eastern Washington led to some key highlights from the team's newcomers.

Running Back Hakim Hill once again split time with fellow redshirt freshman Cornell Canidate. Hill carried the ball 12 times for 62 yards including a 30-yard touchdown. He also caught 2 balls for 29 yards, including his second touchdown of the game, a 12-yard reception from Chad Christensen. Hill also saw time on special teams; with 4 punt returns that went 71 yards. Canidate had a solid game leading ASU in rushing with 15 carries for 100 yards, including an eight-yard touchdown. He also caught one pass for 13 yards. True freshman Fullback Mike Talbot carried twice for nine yards.

Quarterback Chad Christensen got his second start of the season, and had a decent showing. He went 12 for 21 with 135 yards passing for two touchdowns and no interceptions. He once again was not afraid to run the ball, exhibiting his mobility and gaining first downs. True freshman Wide Receiver Derek Hagan caught two of those passes, finishing with 29 yards on the night. Redshirt freshman Wide Receiver Matt Miller had no catches against EWU.

JC transfer Tim Fa'aita once again started the game at left guard and redshirt freshman Lee Burghgraef saw significant playing time at the tight end position, and was in the starting lineup. The trio of redshirt freshmen Chad Rosson, Grayling Love, and Ricardo Carlos, as well as true freshman Chaz White all got into the frey on the offensive line.

On the defensive side of the ball, true freshman Safety Matt Fawley recorded nine total tackles in his first ever start for the Sun Devils. Redshirt freshman Joey Smith, had five total tackles. Linebacker Jamar Williams tallied three total tackles on the night, with one being for a loss of three yards.
