Devils Edge Cats in Regular Season Finale

Arizona State University had to sweat it out against its archrival on Saturday afternoon, but eventually overpowered the University of Arizona 59-54. With this win ASU set a single-season school record in season wins with 26, passing the last record set in 1982. The Devils are now a mere half-game behind Stanford who currently leads the Pac-10 conference.

Co-Captains Emily Westerberg and Aubree Johnson played well on offense, scoring 16 points apiece. Westerberg completed all ten free-throw attempts on the day. Jill Noe had nine points and tied a team-high five assists with Danielle Orsillo.

Keeping Arizona scoreless in the first six minutes of the game, the Devils were off to a good start and led by seven in the first half. However, the Wildcats quickly recovered and took the lead with 4:30 left in the half. The Devils held a slim edge at halftime, 23-22.

The Wildcats' Joy Hollingsworth played a great game scoring 24 points and netting six rebounds, followed by Ashley Whisonant who had 12 points and four assists. Teammate Amina Njonkou grabbed 12 rebounds in the loss.

Beginning with a close score in the second half, Arizona State quickly took the lead due to many successful foul shots. Though the Wildcats would not regain their lead after a successful lay-up at 16:50 that was lost two minutes later, they continued to offensively challenge the Devils.

The Devils converted 14 free-throw shots in the second half, four by Westerberg in the final 15 seconds. This greatly aided them in their victory, as they converted 86% of their attempts in the last twenty minutes. The Wildcats maintained a 44% success rate for field goals throughout the game, but ASU dominated with 50% field goal accuracy in the first half and 44% in the second.

The Devils will now prepare for the Pac-10 tournament which begins on Friday Mar. 2nd.
