Devils Struggle in Loss to Cardinal

Even during their numerous losses, the Sun Devils can normally claim that they were in the game, not letting their opponent run away and giving themselves a chance to win. Tonight at Palo Alto, the maroon and gold found themselves being dominated in the first half, which negated a fine effort in the second and resulted in a 63-53 defeat to Stanford.

Jeff Pendergraph scored the first two points of the game, but that was the only lead that Arizona State (7-21, 1-16 Pac-10) enjoyed all game. Stanford (18-10, 10-7) answered with a 12-0 run, due to the play of Fred Washington and Lawrence Hill. The Sun Devils were able to cut the lead to 14-10 at the 6:45 mark. Alas the Cardinal outscored the visitors 16-6 the remainder of the half and went to the locker room with a 30-16 lead.

The Sun Devils were able to cut the lead in half, and trailed 36-29 at the 14:40 mark of the second half. With ten minutes to go in the game, Stanford takes a 49-37 lead and never let their edge dip below into the single digits the rest of the way.

Pendergraph and Christian Polk were the only two ASU players in double figures scoring with 15 and 10 points respectively. Pendergraph also tied a game-high in rebounds with seven, but Stanford edged the visitors on the boards 29-27. Ironically, in what was not a close game the Sun Devils shot 40.9% from the field and were 8-17 behind the arc – good for 47.1%

On Saturday ASU will play its last Pac-10 regular season game as they visit Cal. The Sun Devils will look for a win as they try to avoid losing all of their conference road games in the 2006-07 season.
