Nothing Coy About it–Missouri Forward Verbals

The future of ASU basketball already looks bright for the upcoming season, with the arrival of the 15th ranked 2007 recruiting class. The 2008 class, which was off to a solid start with local prep star Taylor Rohde, got a tremendous boost when 6-7 195 forward Johnny Coy pledged to the Sun Devils this afternoon. Devils Digest talked to the excited forward about his commitment.

Johnny Coy, from Benton High School in St. Joseph's, Missouri, unofficially visited Tempe during the Pac-10 season. Ironically, at that time he witnessed the maroon and gold barely lose to one of his other suitors, Washington State. Naturally, that trip made a strong impression on him. "They (ASU) laid out everything for me on that visit," he said. "I could see that Coach Sendek was building a good program just like he did at North Carolina State. I know that they're gonna have a great recruiting class this year, and I'm excited to come there the following year."

Arizona State's Associate Head Coach Mark Phelps has been recruiting Johnny Coy for several months now, and offered him a scholarship (ASU was the first school to do so) literally after the first time he saw him play. "I really like Coach Sendek and Coach Phelps," said Coy in a previous interview. "They're awesome. They're great guys and recruit people like they should be recruited."

Washington State, Wichita State and Creighton were the other schools the forward was seriously considering. Schools such as Kansas, Oklahoma and Missouri entered the sweepstakes much after to no avail.

Last summer Coy played baseball, but this year he's dedicated to his AAU club KC Pump ‘n Run, and will play in some of the upcoming AAU tournaments in Dallas and Las Vegas. Coy reported season averages of 26.5 ppg, 12 rpg, 5.4 bpg and 4.2 apg. He was already voted All-City and All-Conference, and will undoubtedly receive more honors such as All-State when those are announced later this month.

Coy is academically qualified and plans to sign in the early 2008 signing period in November of this year.
