ASU Edges USC in Los Angeles

The #17 Arizona State Sun Devils were too much for the #19 USC Trojans, as the Devils defeated the Trojans for the second straight day by a score of 4-3.

The Devils received another strong pitching performance from true freshman, Mike Leake. Leake improved his record to 6-1 on the season, after allowing just three runs on seven hits while striking out five in 7.1 innings of work.

Leake handed the ball over to fellow true freshman, Jason Jarvis, who closed out the game to pick up the save. It was Jarvis' first appearance in a Sun Devil uniform due to the fact that he was just cleared to play this week after some issues regarding his transfer.

The Devils got just enough support offensively to hold off the Trojans. Second baseman, Eric Sogard, got the scoring started with a two-run homer in the third inning to put the Devils on top 2-1. It was Sogard's fifth round tripper of the season.

The Devils scored again in the fourth inning to take a two run lead, but the lead wouldn't last long, as the Trojans scored two in the seventh to tie it up at 3-3. The Devils came right back in the eighth thanks to an RBI single off the bat of Kiel Rolling that knocked in Ike Davis for what would be the game winning run.

The Devils are now 2-0 in conference play and 21-7 overall. They will look for the sweep today, as the teams resume the series at 1 p.m. at Dedeaux Field in Los Angeles.
