Spring Game Marred by Turnovers

Prior to the spring game, it was a large number of bees swarming the field. Later that evening the Sun Devil defenders were the ones doing the swarming. For the second scrimmage in a row, the defense flexed its muscles in front of 5,250 fans at Sun Devil stadium. The offense coughed up the ball seven times and managed just three touchdowns as spring practice came to a close Saturday night.

The White team, composed of mostly first string players, had two successful drives early in the game that culminated with rushing touchdowns of six and 35 yards respectively by Ryan Torain. Those scores accounted for all the points in the first half, as the Maroon offense struggled. Danny Sullivan completed just three of his first eight passes for 14 yards, and running back Keegan Herring was stuffed for a 28-yard loss as he tried to reverse the field on a carry.

In the second half it was the White team that couldn't find the end zone, and had to settle for two field goals, the last one courtesy of a 52-yard conversion by Thomas Weber. Nonetheless, Weber had a sub-par scrimmage for the second week in a row, as he missed shorter attempts from 36 and 48 yards. Wide receiver Kyle Williams threw the ball on a trick play for an interception caught by maroon team safety Jeremy Payton.

The maroon team finally scored late in the second half as Sullivan found Mike Jones in the end zone for a short 2-yard pass. Jones was snake bitten as two sure touchdown passes from Sullivan were broken en route to the end zone by cornerbacks Chris Baloney and Jarrell Holman, who were both on the White team. Troy Nolan from the White team had a game-high six tackles. Alex Asi, also a White team member, tallied two sacks on the night on what has been a very quiet spring for him.

Rudy Carpenter completed 14-of-26 passes for 190 yards for the White Team, while Sullivan 19-of-31 passing for 164 yards for the maroon. Torain paced all ball carriers with 68 yards on nine carries. The senior also coughed up the pigskin once, and lost a fumble that was recovered by Morris Wooten. Wide receiver Rudy Burgess, who missed most of spring practice rehabbing his injured ankle, had a game-high seven catches for 73 yards.

Jamarr Robinson injured his knee and preliminary reports indicated that he tore his ACL and will miss the 2007 season. In a much less serious injury, Jeff Bereuter sprained his knee.
