Florida Wing Player has ASU in Top Three

A couple of years ago, Martez Walker was a Louisville commit. Last January he and the Cardinals decided to part ways, and the Sun Devils are now one of a few schools pursuing him. Thus far ASU had made a strong impression on him to the point that the Montverde standout is seriously considering the maroon and gold.

"The recruiting is going real well now with Arizona State," said he 6-6 215 Martez Walker. "Coach Taylor has been recruiting me for about four weeks now. I really like him and Coach Sendek and we had a lot of communication back and forth. Coach Taylor was at my game at the Kingwood Classic last weekend and I scored 25 points in the game he watched me in. I also had six rebounds and four assists."

Walker plays for the Ft. Sooy AAU team. He committed to Louisville as a freshman at Birmingham (Ala.) Central Park Christian. In his junior year he transferred to Montverde, located in the Orlando area, a move that was ultimately a very successful one. The fighting Eagles finished 30-0 and were named HoopsUSA.com's national champion. Martez was the sixth man on the team, which didn't prevent him from landing on the Class 2A All-State team chosen by the Florida Sports Writers Association. Montverde also finished No. 4 in USA Today's Super 25 national poll.

"I'm good in getting my teammates involved," he said of his skills. "I do have a good outside shoot, and I'm always a winning team. I'm someone who works very hard everyday to get better…I try to model my game after Stephen Jackson. He's like a mentor, a big brother to me. I met him through another mentor of mine. I like to pattern my game after him because he's 6-8, he can shoot, create for himself, get everyone involved…that's just how I play the game."

Last January both he and Louisville went their separate ways in what was termed a mutual decision. "They felt that I wasn't gonna fit their immediate needs," explained Walker. "We came to an agreement that it was best for me to open my recruitment. The coaching staff was real good to me and I appreciate that they came to me and my parents and were honest about my recruitment."

Now that he has re-opened his recruitment, Walker has had an impressive list of schools vying for his services. "My top three are UCLA, Arizona State and Florida State," he stated. "None of the schools offered me, but I feel that an offer from Arizona State is coming real soon. Cincinnati, Texas, and Kentucky are other schools I'm looking at."

Walker wasn't sure what AAU tournaments he will attend in the summer, but he assured that "Arizona State will know ahead of time what tournament I will be in." He doesn't see himself making a decision before the summer, but does plan to sign in the November signing period. Walker stated that he's fully qualified.
