WR Prospect Has Ties to Sun Devils

Time will tell if Marvin Jones will end up on ASU's campus as a member of the 2008 recruiting class. If he does ultimately dons the maroon and gold, a Sun Devil basketball player and an incoming freshman football player will likely play a sizeable factor in the wide receiver's decision. Devils Digest talked to the Etiwanda (Calif.) standout who received a scholarship offer from ASU last Thursday.

The 6-2 175 Marvin Jones attends the same high school that produced Arizona State basketball star forward, Jeff Pendergraph. The wide receiver is also friends with arguably the jewel crown of ASU's 2007 recruiting class, cornerback Omar Bolden. "Arizona State is a good program that's getting better and better," said Jones. "I get to see them on TV sometimes and I know some stuff about the school from talking to Jeff. We mainly talk basketball, but he told me some stuff about the school too…Omar and I talk about recruiting. He told me what a good program ASU is and that I should consider it…it would be real cool going to the same school as Jeff and Omar."

The Sun Devils have recruited Jones since last fall, and according to the wide receiver the maroon and gold were one of the first schools to contact him. "Coach Lubick has been down to my school," he noted, "and I talked to Coach Olson on the phone." Jones has been offered by Oregon State, California, Colorado and Arizona and looks not to venture far from his Southern California surroundings when choosing a college. "I really want to stay in the Pac-10 and play either in California or close by," he remarked. "If I play at one of the Arizona schools that would be fine, because it's only a five hour drive." He added that Cal is the only school he visited out of all the programs that have offered him.

In his junior campaign, Jones caught 63 passes for 1,309 yards and 12 touchdowns, which earned him first team all-state underclass honors. He also played defensive back and collected 62 tackles and three interceptions play that position. "I'm a physical receiver that uses my size against shorter cornerbacks," he said of his skills. "…Omar probably would say that he can cover me, even though he's shorter (smile)…but I can out jump anybody, catch the ball and lower my shoulders when I run with it. I'm very explosive off the ball and quick. I have good route running skills; I'm elusive and have good concentration when catching the ball. I do need to work on my blocking."

Jones is scheduled to attend the Scout.com combine, and has participated in a UCLA skills camp. He indicated that he will perhaps attend ASU's team camp. Overall, he doesn't plan to hit the combine/team camp circuit real hard and doesn't see himself making a commitment for quite some time.

"I wanna visit all the schools and see what kind of vibe I get," he explained. "So I'll probably won't make a decision before the season starts. I'm gonna look at the coaching staff, the way they coach, the scheme they run…all the stuff that can help me make a decision."

Sun Devil fans hope he gets a little help from his friends when making his commitment…
