Devils Hold Off Cats in Series Win

The potent ASU offense had its way with Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year, Arizona's Preston Guilmet recording eight runs. The Wildcats offense answered in the eighth with five runs and threaten to even up their series with their in-state rival. Sun Devil closer Jason Jarvis halted the Cats momentum retiring four UA's batters in succession as the maroon and gold hung on to an 8-7 victory.

Guilmet was roughed up to the tune of eight runs, albeit only four of them earned, as ASU (43-12, 19-4 Pac-10) jumped to an 8-2 lead. Just like in Wednesday's match, Arizona (39-15, 14-9) got on the board first scoring twice off Sun Devil hurler Josh Satow in the third. Satow, who improved to 11-3 with tonight's win, settled down and ended his pitching duty punching out seven UA batters and registering just one walk.

The Sun Devils erupted in the third crossing the plate six times. Eric Sogard drew a bases loaded walk, Ike Davis drove-in Tim Smith, and an error by the Wildcats' shortstop gave the home team the lead for good at 3-2. ASU wasn't done as Kiel Roling cleared the bases with his 13th homerun of the season to give his squad a 6-2 edge. Matt Spencer's dinger in the fifth made it a five-run game. Another Arizona error proved costly as it allowed Tim Smith to score what would eventually become the game's winning run.

The eighth saw ASU's Dustin Brader and Matt Spencer struggling and giving up a total of five runs, which were all scored with two outs in the inning. Fortunately for the Sun Devils Jarvis was masterful as he recorded the last out in that frame en route to his 10th save of the year. This victory should assure ASU a top-8 seed which translates into hosting a regional, and a super regional in the NCAA post-season.

Both teams will play the series finale, which doubles as the regular season closer at 1 p.m. at Winkles Field-Packard Stadium at Brock Ballpark.
