ASU Pursues JC Defensive Lineman

Even though signing day took place over four months ago, the Sun Devils aren't done with their efforts to add players to the 2007 roster. The latest recruiting target is Mt. San Antonio College defensive lineman Paul Unga who visited Tempe over the weekend and talked to Devils Digest about his recruitment with ASU.

"It was wonderful," said the 6-3 255 Paul Unga. "People did a good job showing me around the school. My host was Jeremy Payton, and I also hung out with Richard Tuitu'u, Chad Lindsey and Jonathan Johnson. I got to see all the facilities and the weight room was real tight. I got to see the camp they had…everything was real cool."

Unga, who prepped at Etiwanda (Calif.) High School, noted that ASU has been recruiting him for about a month and half. "Coach Lubick is recruiting me and Coach Erickson came down to see me as well. They were talking to my coaches first and the first time I met anyone from Arizona State they both came down to see me…New Mexico State was the only school that offered me earlier in the year and Texas A&M showed interest. But those schools haven't been recruiting me lately."

The defensive lineman's lack of offers is due to academic reasons which were caused by a financial situation. "I didn't get enough credits because it was hard working and playing football," Unga explained. "So I didn't take as many classes as I wanted to. It's cool because I needed to work then, and now I took all my classes and I can hopefully get to play Division I."

Unga was his school's leading tackler in 2006 with 49 tackles. He also tallied 17 tackles for loss, including 5.5 sacks, eight QB hurries and one fumble recovered for the 9-2 team. "ASU is recruiting me as an end, but they said that they may need some help at tackle so I might play there," he commented. "I prefer to play end, but I'll play wherever they need me to. I'm quick off the ball and I have a good motor – I go all four quarters. I'm fast – I run a 4.65 and I ran that at 260 lbs."

For now, ASU is taking a ‘wait and see' approach in regards to Unga. "They haven't offered me yet because they said they wanted to see my transcripts," he said. "If my grades are good they said they would offer me. I should know later this month what's going on."

And if that offer did come from the Sun Devils? "I'm gonna sign with Arizona State and play this season."

Unga is a three for two player in terms of eligibility.
