Riverside Tailback Garners Pac-10 Attention

Kenjon Barner had an impressive junior season for Notre Dame High School in Riverside, Calif. Thus, it was just a matter of time until the Pac-10 came calling and the Sun Devils are one of the league's schools pursuing the running back. Where does ASU figure in Barner's recruiting picture? Devils Digest sat down with the tailback to discuss that topic and others.

"I've been getting mail from them for 2-3 months," said Kenjon Barner of Arizona State's recruiting efforts. "Coach Lubick is recruiting me and I like the school a lot. They've been one of my top schools for a while and I watched them on TV whenever they're on. I have family that lives near the school and I've been out there a few times. It would be ideal to go there because it's not too far from my immediate family and they can come out and see me play."

The 5-11 170 Barner stated that three Pac-10 programs make up his top-three favorite schools. "Oregon offered me a scholarship," he noted. "Oregon State and Arizona State said that they will probably also offer me later on. I'm hoping that Arizona State offers me…so we'll see what comes around."

Barner noted that he plans to visit all three schools with his dad this summer, and he doesn't have a schedule of who he's going to visit or when. He added that distance won't be an overwhelming factor in his recruitment. "It's nice that Arizona State is pretty close – that's good for Mom's sake (smile)," he commented. "But I'm gonna go where I'm the most comfortable at, because I have to think if this is where I want to be for the next 4-5 years."

Barner rushed for 1,759 yards and 26 touchdowns as a 2006 junior. He was an all-league and all-CIF pick for the Notre dame Titans who finished the season 9-3-1 losing to San Jacinto in the East Valley Division semifinals of the CIF Southern Section playoffs. "My speed has allowed me to do a lot of different things on the field," said Barner who idolizes former NFL great running back Barry Sanders, "but I need to use my stiff arm better."

The tailback indicated that he has no firm timetable as to when he would like to make his verbal pledge. "I'll make a decision whenever I feel the time is right," he explained. "I can't say if it's gonna be before the season starts or after it. I'm gonna sit down with my family and coaches and I will make that commitment whenever we feel it's time to make a decision."

With an SAT score of 1300 and a GPA score of 2.9 various college coaches have already told Barner that he's academically qualified.
