Defensive Déjà vu in Scrimmage

Another scrimmage, another fine performance by the team in white. Just like the Camp T affair, the defense got the best of the offense yielding just two touchdowns, a run by Jarrell Woods and a TD catch by Kerry Taylor. Penalties and dropped balls hampered the offense, and the 5,200 at SDS came away very encouraged by an underrated defense.

The writing may have been on the wall in the first series, where following a three-and-out by the first team offense, Garrett Judah blocked a Jonathan Johnson punt, which was collected and returned for a score by Antone Saulsberry. In the offense's second possession Ryan Torain collected 50 of his yards on one carry, but once again the defense prevented a touchdown and the offense had to settle for a Thomas Weber field goal.

A six-yard scamper by Woods in the later stages of the scrimmage and a 47-yard touchdown pass from Rudy Carpenter to Kerry Taylor, who beat cornerback Travis Smith, accounted for the only touchdowns by the offense.

Carpenter had an 11-20 night passing for 141 yards and a TD. Danny Sullivan was 9-17 for 45 yards. Freshman Samson Szakacsy made a very strong case for being named the third string signal caller as he was 6-7 for 52 yards. Just like the last scrimmage Taylor paced the receivers with five catches for 73 yards and a TD catch. Kyle Williams hauled in four catches for 27 yards.

Linebacker Robert James stood out on defense tallying three tackles. Mike Nixon had four tackles. Converted tight end Dane Guthrie, in his second day playing at defensive end, recorded a sack.

For the first time in the last several days, kicker Thomas Weber faired better than Zach Richards. Weber connected on 2-3 field goals from 31, 47 and missed from 47. Richards was just 1-2 making good on a 42 yarder and missing a 47 one. Weber did well also punting with a 57-yard kick, while starter Jonathan Johnson averaged 46 yards on his seven punts.

Among the notable players who were absent from the scrimmage were Troy Nolan, Rudy Burgess, Omar Bolden, Brandon Smith, and Dimitri Nance.

The last pre-season scrimmage, labeled as a mock game, will take place at Sun Devil Stadium on August 24th at 6:15 p.m. A Fan Appreciation event will follow immediately after the mock game.
