Barbour De-Commits, Pledges to Sun Devils

When it came to his recruitment, it was never all about football for Jarrell Barbour. Academics, staying close to home, and being with your friends was just as important factors in his decision. Thus, the Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial WR switched his commitment from the University of Arizona in favor of its archrival. Devils Digest caught with Barbour following his decision.

"Academically, Arizona State is a better situation for me," said the 6-1 190 Jarrell Barbour. "As a wide receiver I know that the offense coach Erickson runs is a better fit for me. He's doing some good things over there, and the offense fits me better than Arizona's."

"Education is very important to me," he added, "and academically ASU is a better school for me. Staying close to home was important to me too. Tempe is one hour from my house, but Tucson is like two hours, so I wanted to stay closer."

Barbour, who committed to Arizona just nine days ago, saw his teammate and good friend Zach Schlink, pledged to ASU last Saturday. The natural recruiting process began shortly after by the Centennial offensive lineman, and the rest as they say is history. "It will be great to be on the sidelines with him at ASU," said Barbour. "He's like a brother to me. He really wanted me to come over there with him."

As a junior, Barbour was 1st team all-region in a season where he hauled 24 balls for 505 yards and 10 TDs. He was also an accomplished running back, scoring 5 TD's and averaging nearly 10 yards per carry on 43 carries (418 yards). As a corner he tallied 41 tackles and an INT. He also showed solid skills on special teams as a return man and gunner on kick off and punt.

"I run good routes, I catch the ball very well, and I'm fast," he said of his skills. "I'm gonna work out hard to improve on everything about my game. College level is way different than high school, and I've get ready for it."

A de-commitment may imply that a recruit's mind isn't quite made up yet. Nonetheless, he emphatically declares: "ASU is the place for me. I'm done with my trips." Barbour is the sixth known commitment for ASU and the fifth local high player to pledge to the maroon and gold in the 2008 recruiting class.
