Newcomer Report

The Pac-10's most recent coaching additions squared off for the first time on Saturday at Stanford Stadium. Dennis Erickson's Sun Devils took to the road and defeated the hometown Cardinal, headed by Jim Harbaugh. The 41-3 win improves Arizona State to a perfect 5-0 record and numerous first-year players had a big hand in Saturday's night performance.

Once again, the Sun Devil defense turned in a fine performance with the help of several newcomers. Cornerback Omar Bolden made his first career start in place of senior Chris Baloney. The true freshman intercepted a T.C. Ostrander pass and returned it 29 yards for a score. Bolden also added four tackles in addition to the touchdown. Safety Troy Nolan chipped in three stops for the secondary.

Defensive end Luis Vasquez turned in his best performance to date. The junior college transfer was a regular visitor in the Cardinal backfield on Saturday. Vasquez notched three stops, including a quarterback sack, and a pass break up. Defensive tackle Jon Hargis made his second consecutive start on the line. Hargis, who added three tackles, did a nice job up front and was a part of the successful run defense that held Stanford to just -2 yards rushing for the game. Linemen Saia Falahola and Paul 'Unga each had a tackle. Falahola, a redshirt freshman, saw his first action of the season after a tricep injury had sidelined him for just over a month.

Junior college transfer Morris Wooten has been busy at middle linebacker, especially with the absence of Gerald Munns. Wooten was the defense's second leading tackler with seven stops. He also was credited with a quarterback hurry. Redshirt freshman linebacker Jeff Bereuter also registered a tackle.

Kickers rarely get a lot of attention but redshirt freshman Thomas Weber is worthy of some as he has yet to miss a field goal (10-10). Weber nailed all four of his field goals attempts at Stanford Stadium. His makes came from 18, 32, 38, and 41 yards out, respectively. Weber also continues to be a weapon on kickoffs with his strong leg.

Others participating in the game but not in the box score were true freshmen Kerry Taylor and Jonathan English, as well as junior linebacker Garrett Judah.
