Newcomer Report

After setting themselves up for big games in the past, the Sun Devils typically fell short when it mattered most. That wasn't the case against #21 California on Saturday night in front of a sold out crowd. Some of ASU's first-year players were instrumental in the 31-20 win.

Cal running back Justin Forsett netted just 62 yards, thanks to a solid effort by the front seven in Maroon and Gold. Luis Vasquez led all defensive linemen with four tackles, including a big stop in the Cal backfield for a loss of five yards. Redshirt freshman Jon Hargis helped plug the middle with two tackles.

The secondary had their hands full with a trio of talented receivers but Cal's air game really didn't get into a rhythm for much of the game. Safety Troy Nolan was the third-leading tackler on the night with six stops. True freshman cornerback Omar Bolden also added five tackles. Wide Receiver Kerry Taylor caught a 5-yard pass from Rudy Carpenter in the third quarter to help keep a drive alive.

Thomas Weber had another solid outing. The redshirt freshman placed all five of his punts nicely, nullifying DeSean Jackson to -1 yards on one punt return. Weber finished with a 42 yard punting average and one 47-yard field goal.

Other game participants were Morris Wooten, Jonathan English, Jeff Bereuter, and Garrett Judah.
