Lady Devils Drop Season Opener

No. 12 ranked ASU was defeated 75-60 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic Sunday by No. 8 North Carolina. It was a disappointing loss for the team, which is coming off the best season in school history.

Although it was close for most of the game- the Devils trailed by only one point at halftime- were never able to claim the lead during the second-half. Danielle Orsillo, who scored a career-high of 21 points, 16 of them coming in the first half alone.

North Carolina had their biggest lead of the game in the first half, leading 37-27. ASU was able to pull within a point at the ten-second mark after a three-pointer from Orsillo.

With 13:34 left in the game, Orsillo made another key three-pointer which brought the score once again to within a point at 52-51. From there North Carolina went on a 13-2 run that left the Devils trailing 65-53 with 7:26 left to play.

The Sun Devils had 29 turnovers, which gave the Tar Heels the opportunity to score 21 points. The also out rebounded the Devils and held them to only 18 points in the second half.

Jill Noe, the only other player to score in double digits, contributed 13 points. The Devils had a 51.6 shooting percentage during the first half that was followed by a disappointing 21.9 percentage in the second.

ASU will face the Chinese National team on Thursday in an exhibition game and then UC Santa Barbara on Saturday.
